Working Families in Distress and Grow Jobs in Connecticut

The Union Energy Alliance is offering the lowest 12 month fixed residential rates available in Connecticut right now:  7.299 cents per kilowatt hour -- compared to the CL&P rate of 7.615 and the UI Rate of 7.697 cents per kWh.

You could save up to one hundred dollars or more over the course of the next year with the UEA rate.

Sign up now, to lock in the fixed rate, with no entry, exit fees, or early withdrawal penalties.

You will also be helping in a big way with two organizations that serve working families across the state:

The John Driscoll United Labor Agency -- helps working families in distress, on issues ranging from job loss and financial crisis
to substance abuse recovery.

GrowJobsCT -- Works with labor, business and community organizations to preserve and expand manufacturing jobs in our state.
We are endorsed by the Connecticut AFL-CIO, and work in partnership with professional, community-oriented energy providers;

Twain River Energy and Perigee Energy.  Your bill still comes from your current utility, and they continue to provide all service
to the lines. The UEA program is open to all working families, regardless of union affiliation.  Tell your family and friends!

To enroll now, go to http://www.twainriverenergy.com/ and enter the promo code “UEA" to enroll online.  We look forward to your business.  If you have any questions about this program, you may contact an Energy Specialist toll free at 1-877-255-0949

ORGANIZED LABOR RECOGNITION NIGHT

The Rock Cats are hosting their fifth annual Organized Labor Night on Saturday, June 29th, at 6:35 p.m.  The past four years the Rock Cats have played to capacity crowds as nearly 6,000 labor members have attended this event in support of Organized Labor.

Additionally, the night is used as a fundraiser and the Rock Cats host a toiletry and household goods drive for the John J. Driscoll United Labor Agency, a United Way Partner in the Hartford Area.  ULA operates a Food Pantry on 22 Orange Street in Hartford which is supplied primarily through Foodshare (See article below).

People applying for food are also in need of some basic personal care items unavailable on a regular basis from Foodshare.  ULA helps meet some of those needs through the Annual Organized Labor Night.  Staff attend the event, pack the donated items and transport them to the Hartford Office location.

Please join with us and our union brothers and sisters at this special event.

Food Pantry Volunteers

So, What Would You Ask For If It Was Your Birthday and Your Friends Were Coming To Your Party?

Well....6 year old Alexandra asked her friends to bring food donations to her birthday Party, "So people would not have to be hungry".

A HUGE THANK YOU TO ULA's youngest advocate for our Food Pantry!---And to our volunteers:  Sallie, Edna, and Abeba!

ULA Team Joins Foodshare Walk
It's Not Too Late.....
You may still contribute to ULA's Hartford Food Pantry by making a contribution directly to our Agency. Make checks payable to "ULA" and mail to 56 Town Line Road, Rocky Hill, CT 06067.

Pictured at left are Rodney and Dian from IAMAW 1746, Sallie Johnson (Behind the Giant Snoopy) and ULA Team Captain Dave Mitchell.

On Sunday, May 5, 2013 area Unions participated in the Greater Hartford Walk Against Hunger.  Pictured above, volunteers and staff provide handouts to walkers from ULA's table. The joint effort of businesses, unions and individuals began in Hartbeat Park at 1:00 p.m. (Check-in time) with the Walk starting at 2:00 p.m. The Walk benefits BOTH Foodshare AND the United Labor Agency's Food Pantry at 22 Orange Street, Hartford.

There are very few programs that can deliver such a return on investment--every dollar received at Foodshare will return $10 worth of food to the community. ULA receives a large portion of the funds raised by walkers who have designated ULA as a benefiting agency. Our percentage depends on the amount collected. The more money raised, the larger our portion. For ULA, this allows us to continue delivering emergency assistance to help clients in need.

Not able to join the Walk, that is OK--Become a "Spirit Walker" by signing up on-line or by printing out the following form and mailing it in to Foodshare (click on link below).

Thank you for any contribution you make!

ULA Joins Non-Profits at Capitol

Hartford, Conn. (April 24, 2013) – According to the National Council of Nonprofits, if the nonprofit sector were a country, it would have the seventh largest economy in the world. During ‘CT Nonprofits Week at the Capitol,’ the Connecticut Association of Nonprofits (CT Nonprofits) seeks to illuminate the fact that nonprofits are an essential component of the community and economy, providing much needed services of the highest quality, while keeping costs to a minimum and creating jobs.

For the seventh year, CT Nonprofits, the largest membership organization in the state dedicated exclusively to working with nonprofits in Connecticut, will celebrate its ‘CT Nonprofits’ Week at the Capitol’ from April 22-April 26, 2013 in the Concourse of the Legislative Office Building, 210 Capitol Avenue, daily from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

“During this celebration, we are eager to help our members connect with their legislators and educate key audiences regarding the value of the essential services they provide,” said Ron Cretaro, Executive Director, CT Nonprofits.

CT Nonprofits Week at the Capitol 2013 features 50 nonprofits from across Connecticut and highlights the variety of work that nonprofits do to enhance the quality of life for all citizens of Connecticut. Exhibitors represent all aspects of the nonprofit provider community including health and human service organizations, groups that support people with disabilities, arts and culture, women’s and youth organizations, and a vast array of community service providers.

“Nonprofits benefit Connecticut communities in ways that cannot easily be quantified,” said Julia Wilcox, Senior Public Policy Specialist, Connecticut Association of Nonprofits. “Each day, nonprofit organizations help build communities, foster civil society, strengthen the social and cultural fabric and improve the quality of life for people in Connecticut. It is impossible to place a price tag on the value they bring and we are excited to celebrate their vital contributions during CT Nonprofits Week at the Capitol.”
